Rama Prasad

Sanskrit Consultant

Rama grew up in the Sanskrit language. His earlier memories are filled with his father teaching Sanskrit at home every day for 3-4 hours. He continued to learn Sanskrit at school and then at the university. Later on, Rama started exploring the role of Sanskrit in Vedic literature. When we learn the meaning of a technical term it takes us to its deeper meaning and helps us use it with precision. Most Vedic branches of science such as Yoga have clear definitions for each of its vital words. But, Ayurveda is filled with words that are not defined or described well enough which results in severe ambiguity and impossible communication.

  • Aspects such as 'graham and etymology can be helpful. But, a word with a precise meaning or definition is vital to know it.
  • The Ayurvedic word 'dosha' is a perfect example. In most Indian languages, dosha means a fault. This is the colloquial application. Not a scientific one. Unfortunately, most Ayurveda professionals use the same meaning for the Ayurvedic 'dosha'. Think about the meaning of the word RAM at a computer shop (a memory chip), an animal farm (a sheep) and at a temple (supreme lord). They are entirely different, right?
  • The word 'dosha' stems from 'dush' mean vikrti. 'Vikrti' has two meanings 'vizesham krti' (perfect reformation or physiology) and 'viruddham krti' (inappropriate reformation, meaning pathology). When we analyse these two meanings, we get that 'dosha' is the measurement of reform. Everything in this universe is going through reform - in other words, they are transforming or evolving. Dosha is thus defined as 'a categorisation method'. The concept dosha is used to categorise everything, every structure and function into three units and their permutations and combinations. This is just a start in understanding the word dosha using Sanskrit.
